Yesterday I experienced flame twirling photography it was amazing. My class NM3203 - Photomedia had a field trip to Magnetic Island.
We captured rock Kangaroo's, scenery and then the finale, Flame Twirling.

Here are some of my photos I captured on the field trip to Magnetic Island.

The assistant teacher for the day was Louise George we had here a few times for class prior to this and she also gave a speech on her career travels.  At the end of day at Magnetic Island I took the incentive to ask Louise if she had any other weddings booked for this year.  It turned out she does, and I asked her if I was able to accompany her on the day and be mentored by her.  She was very easy to talk to and happy to have me assist her at her next wedding photography day.

I received her business card so I am able to contact her.  On her business card she has a interesting capturing logo and her web address, email and her mobile number.

This gave me insight in to a business card that is clear and precise.  Her email also is her name of the business rather than a personal email.  I feel this has shown me on a good way to produce and design a business card and with this I will  create a new email to go on my business card which reflects my business name and website rather than using my JCU email.

Being in the Arts - Arminelle Fleming

Reflection

you may be thinking about what are you going to do next after graduation from University.

Work or Pleasure?

Is a career inn the arts for you?
- will you make a living from what you do? How?
- will creating for money be too draining?
-can you be artist for pleasure and have another job for money? do you want to?
-how important is it to you that people pay you for your work?
-how is your work contributing to yourself? to your community?
-can you make your work more commercial?

Reflecting on the above points I feel I would like to do art as a career and pleasure. But if I am not able to accomplish this at first I would therefore on a realistic note have a casual or full time job and work on my art work as pleasure but try to be involved in the arts as much as I can.

we need to look at how we are being paid and contributed to and how we contribute to society.

I was not aware at first the contribution on society as when I filled out a survey I mentioned in one of the comments that I was being an artist for myself.  But now I reflect on this I realize I am contributing to society and giving people enjoyment and keepsakes of their special day.

This was brought home to me when I saw my photos from the couples wedding printed and framed hanging on the lounge room wall.   To see this then actually gives satisfaction and realization that I am contributing to society.  To see my work on someone else s wall was also a ego boost to my self esteem. :-)

Where do you Fit?

Hopefully you will have thought about your industry and the history of your medium
-what purpose does you art form serve today?
-has that changed from 50, 100, 500 years ago?
-What role do you want to play in the history of your medium? commercial? Experimental? social?

Remember if you work in the arts purchases are tax detectable.  Keep your receipts for everything you purchase.

Recommend to read over your history of your preferred genre.

Passion
What drives us to creating.....?
-do we have a desire to express emotions?as a form of therapy?
-fame? fortune?
-use and improve on our skills?
-innovate the form we work in?
-yearning to push social boundaries?

Challenges
-bad habits?
-self-doubt?
-criticism?
-theft/appropriation?
-lack of resources?
-limited work options?

Workshop

how do you describe yourself to others.: -

I am an emerging artist.  My first passion is Photography.  I am also interested in visual arts, illustration and new media art.  Digital and traditional materials. Entering my work into competitions and exhibitions.  I enjoy taking photographs of weddings and families.

NETWORKING - NETWORKING - NETWORKING

the key to networking is about talking to people and talk to people about their work. show a genuine interest into their work. you learn what is happening in the industry.

col calling
-contact employers/company's and ask them for an interview, etc.
-network, listen to people, incite to the industry

community arts

-dipping your toes into things you don't know
-experiencing other areas, to find out what there is available and what areas you can work in
-take opportunities when they arise
-
****make sure you have a clear objective for your presentation
how you present your self is the important part of the presentation, not on your portfolio itself

registering a business name has a price
registering a ABN is free

when you go into freelance use your ABN as this looks professional.  Have a ABN on a template for pricing and invoicing and quotes, add your logo as well.

verbal contracts are hard, try to cover yourself, and send an email so you have this down in writing.

?do I actually have skills to become serious and achieve in my chosen career?

Identify in my skill set the holes in which I need to work on further to make sure my career in the art industry becomes a realist and not just a dream.

maybe include a context page for your journal. eg. week 1 = My first reflection and have it linked to this, etc....

week 10 - nm3001 - journal

this is the last week before the journal is due.

I will reflect on my work so far and reflect on the class within the last 10 weeks.

We had special guest speakers present there chosen career path ways and their personal journey through their studies and careers to where they are today.  I found this interesting and inspiring  As most guest were following a long life dream to work in their area of expertise and their field of passion.

I am not as lucky to have worked in the areas of my chosen field of visual arts and photography as yet because I chose a different direction in life after leaving school. I was firstly accepted into a visual arts course at TAFE, however I was also  given the opportunity to work and so I decided to take the job instead deferring my course.

Looking back now I realise my first job was within the industry in which I would like to work, as it was at a local newspaper.  I was working and living on Thursday Island at the time, the newspaper was small but was just taken over and was being created into a new business and paper for the Island.  My job was to type the stories and layouts of the paper, help collate and distribute the paper.

However I only stayed here for a year, as my parents were leaving and I was not long out of school so I moved back to Townsville with them.

My next job wasn't so artistic, I was a receptionist at CSIRO. My second area of expertise I guess was typing, and there fore the office scene was an area to go towards.

I lasted about 2 years at this employment when I then met my ex husband and my boys father.  I have been pre occupied since being a full time mother, I  have worked for a few years inbetween this time frame this being at the Australian Taxation Office again as clerical work.

Leaving the ATO in late 2005, as a single mother of 3 boys and now a daughter I became interested in the arts once again.  I became addicted to a online mother group called CafeMom and started to take photographs of everything and anything in the year 2008.

My daughter turning a certain age I decided to take the opportunity to change my career path from clerical work to work with in the art industry and attaining a certificate IV at TAFE in 2010 and then completing my diploma of Visual Arts in 2011.  My first passion however would definitely be photography, so I decided to attend university as TAFE only had the drawing and painting areas available. With the diploma qualifications I was then able to apply to University as a mature age student where I have been completing my Bachelor of New Media Arts since 2012.

Now in my final year of my course I hope to pursue my goal of working within the arts industry.

I would like to try a few different things to begin with to see what exactly is available in the work force as an artist.  However being a mature age student and living in Townsville I am a little scared that I have chosen the wrong path to travel down as there is not alot of  positions available and I am not as young as some others who have also just completed their degree.

I have reflected on my own pathway to were I am today as I felt inspired from those in class, and I wanted to stop and reflect on myself to see where I have come from and where I am heading for the near future.

One teacher Mr David Salisbury  stated "take the opportunities that come to you" as if you don't you will not challenge yourself or go on the journey it gives you.

I feel this is good advice, especially to the younger generation, as we can not be too choosey in this industry and we need to go with those opportunities and taking these opportunities will then lead us to other paths to take in our career on to.

NETWORKING

Networking is definitely a big necessity and rewarding at the end in the art industry.  I have learnt this over my last 5 years of study and being involved within the art industry.

Recess Break - NM3001 - Journal

While checking my email today, I came across an email from an art show, Linden Postcard Show which was due to end on Monday night for entries. However the email said with difficulty of the online registration it has been extended until Tuesday evening at midnight. I wanted to enter this so though it was a great sign. However after registering and finding out more details, I have discovered it has a $55 dollar entry fee. This at this stage of the week is not a good thing for me, as do not have much money and therefore can not enter.
The price is not that important, as there is great rewards to enter such as prizes ranging from $600 to $5000.  And if I didn't have a win, then my work and name would be distributed statewide as this exhibition will be held in Melbourne.

However it was good to register with the site for further development with my art career.

Gallery 247

Looks like a great site to be part of so I can be informed on further art exhibitions and contests.

A fellow art student just shared a great site to keep a note of called:

This is a live stream site which interviews artist, promoting North Queensland Events with in Music, Art and more.

week 8 & 9 - NM3001 - Journal

Week 8 - David Salisbury was guest speaker.

Preparing a Portfolio Presentation

Being able to articulate your work and know your work.

contextualizing your work and how your work fits in the scheme of things.

for a portfolio presentation present your work as an artist.  Image the people in the room are potential clients. If you have a purpose for the presentation, and this is your focus, the awareness will be on the audience and not on you.

practice practice practice, as this will make you more aware of what you are talking about, and try not to read from a script.

THOSE WHO FAIL TO PLAN, PLAN TO FAIL!

Do not wing your presentation, prepare plan practice

verbally articulate what you are going to say.then you will be able to say it better, and be able to speak with flow rather than stumbling.

How are you inspired? = talk about this

Deciding clarifying objective.
  • what are you wanting your audience to do think and feel? example understand the time it takes to produce, understand your intent, clarify its application
  • Is your presentation aiming to get clients, sales or appreciation?
  • what is your point of difference? example versatility? reliability? Uniqueness?
what make you as an artist unique?
have a purpose for your presentation, think about the other uses of this presentation.

contextualizing your work, expertise recognizing your work. Industry recognizing the work you do.

sourcing content
where will you find information that supports your works importance/relevance/existence?

  • expert/industry opinion
  • personal experience/opinion
  • public opinion
a good presentation will include examples of all of these. make sure you take note of quotes, images or any other content that would be beneficial in supporting your presentation.

selecting visual aids, portfolio, but even they we need to show the portfolio, the focus is on yourself as a artist

have sections of the portfolio in a power-point presentation, rather than all the portfolio site.

YOU ARE THE FOCUS not your portfolio

what's going to be helpful to your audience

visual aids to be used effectively

make sure your presentation flows from one point to the next.

try and remember your words, but if you can not, use palm cards with dot points to prompt you on to the next area.

clarifying the brief
break up the sections and structure your speech

if you want to use a quote.  if it is an artist or person we do not know, refer to the person who they are. give an example of who they are, and explain,

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE

opening and ending
using dot points
using visual aids
use friends/family

grab your audience with your opening, and make them part of the presentation
ending - sum up your presentation, and finish your presentation in a way that inspires your audience and leaves them with something to remember.

Being in my class NM3102 Professional Practice and listening to a guest speaker, I realize how important it is to practice your speech, and try not to add to many fillers, such as UM, SO and AND.  The guest speaker said um many of times, and it got rather distracting to the point I felt uninterested in listening to her.

Yandell Walton - projection artist - http://www.yandellwalton.com/

Projection work looks very interesting, and this would be something I would want to look into further as an artist.  I think I will have to be more involved with workshops within the art industry rather than University.  There does not seem to be as much hands on classes at University, I completed Time Based Media, which is a movie based subject, and gives you the fundamentals of working and editing in video, however projection is again another area to learn.

Artist Yandell Walton collaborates with others, programmer, animator etc. This is similar to working in a team at University, however I feel in the work force, the collaboration would be different, as my group project in Time Based Media was a very challenging project.  I find there are some people that dominate others, and therefore take over and feel in charge of everything.

I know this can also happen in the workforce as well, but I also feel working in the work force there is a diversity of people and areas and each person will have their own job to participate in, and the collaboration would work much more smoothly then one person taking over and doing everything.

week 7 - nm3001 - Journal

Working on my portfolio for photo-media this week. My 20 images for Vanitas still life. I started to work on my TAFE and University studies Vanitas. I feel I didn't do too well as I would like to have as I was being rushed a little to get all my objects together which I wanted to take to University studios to photograph and then I forgot a few things. My friend was taking a photograph of me for her project, so I was trying to kill two birds with one stone. Her photos turned out great. Mine on the other hand weren't as good as I expected them to be.

My plan for my vanitas is to photograph the objects and then use textures over them, playing in Photoshop to produce the final image. This is what I enjoy doing most. I was starting to get cold feet on the theme I have chosen but I am unsure of what else to do at this stage and time will run out soon. An example of my work I created is below:

Original

After

I found a texture online searching for free textures. I feel it works pretty good but I think I want to try to make some of my own textures to go with my vanitas. Seeing we have to do 20 images though, I think my goal will be 10 textures and see how I go with time.

I did the above image first, and then I took some objects away to create a different type of composition, as my fellow friend and student, suggested to have only a few objects and see what it looks like. I like both images however I feel maybe the one with the most objects fit the vanitas theme in a  more appropriate way.

Reflecting on my art practice and working on my photomedia portfolio I am starting realize my direction within the art industry.

(multi-skilled artist) - I feel this may be my direction

ART THERAPY - I would like to look into this more apparently there is a external course through a university down south. There is nothing in Townsville at this stage.

Notes....

creative arts industries

Performance
theater/film - dance - music

art/design
fine arts - photography - design

text
literature - scripts (advert scripts)

within each area are a variety of employment areas

- administration  eg. ticketing, pays, program development etc
          government organizations and large companies.
- arts work eg. actual work you do as an artist
- marketing eg. market artist, literate agents, etc.
- education eg. companies, galleries. museums educational officers, to link the public, and schools
- community arts eg. educator or facilitator. eg. life line, woman center, head space, flexible learning center and organizations

the difficulty with diversity - jack of all trades master of none.  However in a regional area, its classed to be multskilled there is not enough work for one area of expertise.
are we going to specialize?  if we are going to specialize in one area some questions to ask yourself.
-where are the greatest job opportunities?
-what will give you the greatest opportunity for growth ?
-which areas/skills are you most competent?
-and most confident?
-which activities give you the most pleasure?

As I mentioned in last weeks post, I feel I do not have a specialty as yet in my time of my art journey.  However I am starting to reflect and realize the reas I am more confident in and enjoy doing the most.  These areas are photography and visual arts, fine art photography.

Suggestions of things to include in your journal are as follows:

Future Plans
-definite goals
-steps and processes we intend to take
-further training into your field and mentor-ships
-non-work related, eg. travel

Opinions
-specializing
-funding and money
-ethics eg. what is considered ethical in our field. where do we stand, what is our boundaries.
-procurement
-flexibility, how flexible are we going to be with our craft
-teaching/academia
-life impacts
-new innovations
-your education, maybe subjects that are irrelevant, or beneficial (find a positive within it)
-what is art within society eg. your impact with your art and what is your role within society

Praise/criticism
-how we take it
-how we give it
-what do we do with it eg. grow as an artist and build and grow as an artist

Inspiration
-people      -environment     -ideas/concepts   -own experiences
-styles       -other artworks     -issues    -stimulants

History
-where do you sit in the industry?

Business planning reflection eg. on small business

my goal for the future ..............

week 6 - nm3001 - Journal

week 6 NM3001 - Journal

photographer Andrew Rankin was guest lecture who spoke on his journey as a photographer.

He mentioned to make the portfolio specific and not include everything.  His professional opinion.  But I feel as the start of my career, I don't know where I am to specialize and what is my strength.

I feel once I know where my strength lies then I will know how to specialize in one area, but however to begin I feel my portfolio should be the way I have constructed my portfolio and will leave this the way it is until I am more established and reconsider as a photographer.
Maybe if I was a younger student and not a mature age student, this specialized portfolio might be more beneficial to them.

Andrew mentioned having two sites with each of his specialty, with a link linking to each of these.  He mentioned to have a blog, to show that you are current with the photography scene.

This idea could be an option, as i can create other sites, on my main portfolio and  add the links to the other areas, so when i give my portfolio to certain areas of expertise, i only show them the portfolio which is represented to their area and what they are interested in.

go for a target audience

who is going to see your portfolio and what it represents.

squarespace website was recommended $120 annual fee. JCU student discount %50 only 60 for a year.

your work will take you were it wants to go.

but you can create your own destiny

have direction - to show the client you know where you want to go.

social media helps build - have a structure - hootsuit system to combine all the links.  Marketing and business.

yes he has a point of only have a website towards a specialized area, as when you  send the portfolio to a specific area and you don't want them to look at other work and be uninterested and not bother looking into the specialized area.   So I think I will update my portfolio with links to show these specialized areas.

who are you?

what is your journey
do you have a destination
what do you respond to
what is your purpose
be present in your own life
what makes you special
your unique individualism is your style

Planet earth is huge

week 5 - NM3001 - Journal

FUNDING

Philanthropic  -   Ian Potter Foundation
Myer foundation

sponsorship - Individual and Business

Fundraising - products, events, crowd funding, pozible and kickstarer

Looking at funding in this class and in professional practice I have thought about applying for a grant next year to help me with a project on mental health. I would like to photograph people who suffer from mental health and try to portray the individual and the illness as a normal every day person. There is still a stigma with mental illness.
I feel my project could give awareness to others and give myself an opportunity to begin on my art journey. I have now completed almost 5 years of study, first studying at TAFE and completing my diploma of Visual Arts in 2011.  This gave me the requirements needed to attend University.
I started my Bachelor of New Media Arts course in 2012.  This year is my third year and last year of the degree.
I know I need a more in depth concept to go with my proposal for the grant, and I will be able to have help with this as i have been networking since attending TAFE.

Week 5 is a class associated with projects and funding.

when looking for a grant make sure you double check the due date.  The emerging artist grant is due by Feb 2015.
double check the requirements of the grant.

contact- contact the personal prior to the application, so when the grant is being processed they know you.

grant application and planning your proposal.

project description.

If you can not say your project in one sentence re think the project as it may not be accomplished.

sentence
what
event, product, program and business

there is a lot of jargon in a proposal.  eg. emerging

is the project, local, global, online

how accessible is the project.  how is it going to be accessed. how many people will it affect.

details - length of time of project. timeline. initiation of project

professional development - is a subsidy of a grant, it will assist you with an amount, but you also have to put in to contribute to this with your own money.

you can get non interest government loans

project description
Who
company/group/individual
artists/art-workers  - eg. emerging, established, well known etc
participants - interaction of the work,
accessibility - general public
specifically benefits from the grant financially

project outcomes
BE SPECIFIC
audience/participant numbers
number of performance/events/workshops
number of sales/products

equitable - when you have the money and you need to do a report to give back to the government body who funded the money.

Be reflective - reflecting on my professional practice has definitely made me think about what I want to achieve for the future.  Where as prior I was just trying to complete my degree and not worry about the future.

Benefits
personal - enable you to focus on this project full time, so you can achieve the project
how is it going to affect the arts community. - assist the emerging artist, up skill, if starting a business - how is it going to affect the arts - employing artist
general public - think outside the square - (promotes mental health and brings awareness to kill the stigma of mental illness)

http://www.arts.qld.gov.au/funding/radf.html

Future Possibilities
further projects in similar ?
artist continuing to contribute to community eg. giving back a workshop
future collaborations, eg. building a relationship with others

Budgets - must balance
income
what ever grant you are going for. must include the sum of money you are going for in the budget.
earned income - estimate
box office eg. 500 x $10 = $5,000
sales
workshop fees
donations

grants/sponsorship eg. if you are going for more than one grant for the project you must add this to the budget
eg. radf -unconfirmed
xstra- confirmed
personal contribution - cash or in-kind (what is the dollar value of you or others giving to you, can also be product)

expenditure - spending money on what
professional fees - art workers, technicians, admin/documentation
production costs - venue fees, equipment hire, equipment purchase (consumable not an asset for the future), materials eg paper, ink (used to produce the product), catering, transport, accommodation, rights or royalties, printing eg. catalog,

administration - communication, insurance, company expenses, stationary, consumables, electricity/rent,

marketing/publicity - printing, advertising, merchandise,

I found this class very insightful. I am not sure if this is the area in which I want to venture down, but I am considering it.  My ideal situation would be to gain a full time job but as a realistic situation I don't think I will be able to do this, as I have not worked since 2005, I am an older person, and I have not had too much work experience to accompany my resume.  Living in Townsville also it is harder to work in the arts industry.  My councilor actually asked me if I would consider moving cities.  There are more galleries and work opportunities in other cities to Townsville however I had not considered this to be a option until my councilor brought it up and questioned me.  The idea was a little daunting but also exciting.

Week 4 - NM3001 - Journal

There was no class today as our teacher Arminelle  was sick. I hope you recover and feel better soon.

I've been browsing the internet for another portfolio site, as I am not too happy with the one I already have.  It is probable fine but I want a site that has a black background, as I feel photos are viewed better on a black background and are more vibrant, this is just my opinion and my preference.

I asked on my facebook if anyone knew of any great portfolio sites.  Had two comments so far with one of the following link,
and

I already have a Wix account it's not a bad site however already having this I wanted to try and create something new for my portfolio submission for class.

I have signed up to the weebly site and it has slide show to show your photos this to me is a great way to display your photographs and have others view them.  The still photographs are a great way as well but having the slide show I find is much more creative and professional looking.

It's still a work in progress.

This website templates seem easy to follow ones you work it out.  The wix site is much easier to navigate around so I would recommend this for those who are beginners at starting their new site.

week three - Journal - nm3001

Notes:

Points to create a portfolio

# Add some music to my portfolio if I can and to my webpages.
# make sure music goes with my images.  Maybe only use a melody/
# pick out the best photos and art work for my portfolio. Not doubling up on similar poses. But chose the best.  I need to go back and double check this.
# Have someone double check this for me, and preferably not family or friends.
# categories my work in appropriate groups.
# Remember what you are trying to achieve form your portfolio.
# don't add old work, only go back a few years maybe 5.

Artist resumes

# do not clutter up your resume with too much clutter.
# add - portfolio on request

Portfolio what to include

# contact info and profile photo
# treat it as a ad or business card
# chose a palette color of dark blue dark green and brown to bring attention
# phone, email, name of studio
# education
# use 10 - 12 point
# list private instructor and course attended

Am I going to make a living from the art I do. Or is it going to be a secondary living.

My goal is to work in the art industry. Either by working in a gallery or creating a small business. My ideal job would be to do both. Having a paid job and  being freelance photographer. This is my ideal goal for next year when I finish this course, Bachelor of New Media Art. ☺Yeah! this is the first time I've really knowen what I would really like to do after study. I am not sure if it is a realistic thoght but this is something I would like to do.

# add work experience to portfolio
# internships
# student exhibitions
# add skills, software you can use,
# references, written resumes on request

Journal due date is Friday 10th October before 3pm

_______________________________________________________________

I finally gave my photos I took for a wedding 2 weeks ago to the newly wedded couple. It was such a adrenaline rush while taking the photographs.  I just wish I was better at it. I get half good photos and half not so good. I need to work on my focus, as I feel my composition is pretty good and just my focus isn't so good.  I'd love to buy a new lens for my camera as I only have the kit lenses and a cheap tamron lens. The good lenses are more expensive then the camera body.

I guess when the most expensive wedding that I've captured was only a payment of  200 dollars, I am not going to make it to get that lens. I know once I finish University and make enough money though I will be able  to buy that awesome lens. :-)

Some of the photos from the recent wedding which was captured on 8th August are below.

Semester Two Year Three - Last Year of Course Bachelor of New Media Arts - Week Two - NM3001 - JOURNAL

Journal

I decided to type my journal on my old blogger which we started back in  first year. This was started in one of my core subject classes, it was a requirement to join Gmail and start a blog. Now it is a requirement in third year to write a reflective journal on our professional practice.

I find writing especially in academic style a hard task and I prefer to take photographs, so this will also be uploaded with photos, but a requirement is to have at least 1500 words in the journal. When I see 1500 words on a assignment it totally freaks me out and I straight away I begin to get panic thoughts about the assignment rather than just looking at the assignment and working my way through it and then see how many words I have written. No. I just freak out straight away. I must admit I don't feel as bad as I did back in first year.  But then again first year I tried to accomplish the unaccomplished for myself and I enrolled in 5 subjects!. I wanted to do a subject to help me on this task of writing academic so I enrolled after I was already enrolled in my 4 subjects already.  The subject was called Effective Writing to assist me with my writing skills. Unfortunately it all got to me in the end and I never finished the last assignment so it is regarded as incomplete on my academic listing. This journal not having to be academic style is a relief, but grammar needs to be good and my punctuation is not, as I seem to put too many commas where not needed. I have learned a bit about this in my subject but I still have a bad habit of adding the commas in the wrong areas.

This subject is called NM3001 Reflective Practitioner.  It is a core subject related to the course Bachelor of New Media Arts.  My major for this course is Photography and my minor is Illustration.

We have just started back for the second semester of the year.  However I have yet to have a break as I had a block subject called Photojournalism and then another block subject when that finished called Drawing Portfolio. So I am starting to feel it, and feel overwhelmed creating assignments and studying. I just have to get through this next 6 months though and then I will have finished my three year course. I am very much over studying at the moment as prior to University I went to TAFE for two years to receive my diploma in Visual Arts, which gave me the accreditation to be able to study at University.

Even though I do not have a job, as I am a full time single mum as well as a full time student, I do believe this is a accomplishment in itself being able to study for the past five years. I feel I am ready to finally attach the work force again. If I am successful that is to gain a job in my chosen industry of the Creative Arts.

As soon as we were told we had to produce a portfolio, I started to work on this straight away as this is one thing I feel I am good at doing. Well there are so many pre template pages online, you can make your porfolio on. I probable have a few already, but only small. So when another class member mentioned the one he is on, I had to check it out and see what it was like.

and this is where I have started to create my portfolio.
