week 10 part 2 - nm3001 - Journal

Yesterday I experienced flame twirling photography it was amazing. My class NM3203 - Photomedia had a field trip to Magnetic Island.
We captured rock Kangaroo's, scenery and then the finale, Flame Twirling.

Here are some of my photos I captured on the field trip to Magnetic Island.

The assistant teacher for the day was Louise George we had here a few times for class prior to this and she also gave a speech on her career travels.  At the end of day at Magnetic Island I took the incentive to ask Louise if she had any other weddings booked for this year.  It turned out she does, and I asked her if I was able to accompany her on the day and be mentored by her.  She was very easy to talk to and happy to have me assist her at her next wedding photography day.

I received her business card so I am able to contact her.  On her business card she has a interesting capturing logo and her web address, email and her mobile number.

This gave me insight in to a business card that is clear and precise.  Her email also is her name of the business rather than a personal email.  I feel this has shown me on a good way to produce and design a business card and with this I will  create a new email to go on my business card which reflects my business name and website rather than using my JCU email.

Being in the Arts - Arminelle Fleming

Reflection

you may be thinking about what are you going to do next after graduation from University.

Work or Pleasure?

Is a career inn the arts for you?
- will you make a living from what you do? How?
- will creating for money be too draining?
-can you be artist for pleasure and have another job for money? do you want to?
-how important is it to you that people pay you for your work?
-how is your work contributing to yourself? to your community?
-can you make your work more commercial?

Reflecting on the above points I feel I would like to do art as a career and pleasure. But if I am not able to accomplish this at first I would therefore on a realistic note have a casual or full time job and work on my art work as pleasure but try to be involved in the arts as much as I can.

we need to look at how we are being paid and contributed to and how we contribute to society.

I was not aware at first the contribution on society as when I filled out a survey I mentioned in one of the comments that I was being an artist for myself.  But now I reflect on this I realize I am contributing to society and giving people enjoyment and keepsakes of their special day.

This was brought home to me when I saw my photos from the couples wedding printed and framed hanging on the lounge room wall.   To see this then actually gives satisfaction and realization that I am contributing to society.  To see my work on someone else s wall was also a ego boost to my self esteem. :-)

Where do you Fit?

Hopefully you will have thought about your industry and the history of your medium
-what purpose does you art form serve today?
-has that changed from 50, 100, 500 years ago?
-What role do you want to play in the history of your medium? commercial? Experimental? social?

Remember if you work in the arts purchases are tax detectable.  Keep your receipts for everything you purchase.

Recommend to read over your history of your preferred genre.

Passion
What drives us to creating.....?
-do we have a desire to express emotions?as a form of therapy?
-fame? fortune?
-use and improve on our skills?
-innovate the form we work in?
-yearning to push social boundaries?

Challenges
-bad habits?
-self-doubt?
-criticism?
-theft/appropriation?
-lack of resources?
-limited work options?

Workshop

how do you describe yourself to others.: -

I am an emerging artist.  My first passion is Photography.  I am also interested in visual arts, illustration and new media art.  Digital and traditional materials. Entering my work into competitions and exhibitions.  I enjoy taking photographs of weddings and families.

NETWORKING - NETWORKING - NETWORKING

the key to networking is about talking to people and talk to people about their work. show a genuine interest into their work. you learn what is happening in the industry.

col calling
-contact employers/company's and ask them for an interview, etc.
-network, listen to people, incite to the industry

community arts

-dipping your toes into things you don't know
-experiencing other areas, to find out what there is available and what areas you can work in
-take opportunities when they arise
-
****make sure you have a clear objective for your presentation
how you present your self is the important part of the presentation, not on your portfolio itself

registering a business name has a price
registering a ABN is free

when you go into freelance use your ABN as this looks professional.  Have a ABN on a template for pricing and invoicing and quotes, add your logo as well.

verbal contracts are hard, try to cover yourself, and send an email so you have this down in writing.

?do I actually have skills to become serious and achieve in my chosen career?

Identify in my skill set the holes in which I need to work on further to make sure my career in the art industry becomes a realist and not just a dream.

maybe include a context page for your journal. eg. week 1 = My first reflection and have it linked to this, etc....
